Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy
Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) is the process of relearning cognitive skills that have been lost or altered as a result of damage to pathways in the brain or neurochemistry. If skills cannot be relearned, then new ones have to be taught to enable the person to compensate for their lost cognitive functions.
What is Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy?
Education
Focus on awareness and personalised education for client and family members.
Process Training
Focus on retraining of cognitive skills through direct practice of skills.
Strategy Training
Focus on identification and implementation of strategies to compensate for lost skills.
Functional Activities
Focus on practical real life tasks to improve relevant and purposeful skills.
The Process of CRT
Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy follows a structured process, tailored to each individual’s needs. Fatigue management plays a huge part in the success of any rehabilitation program, and BIS Services are experts in this area. Our CRT Therapist and CEO, Natalie Mackenzie provides training and education around fatigue management for clients and professionals.
Initial Assessment
The process begins with a detailed evaluation of the individual’s cognitive abilities, emotions, and behavioural needs. This comprehensive assessment, alongside a comparative assessment with family or friends guides the development of a personalised therapy plan. Recommendations reports are provided.
Goal Setting & Values
Personalised short- and long-term goals are established with input from the client, family, and the therapy team. These goals focus on areas most critical to improving day-to-day life, and those that are most important for the client, based on their own values and motivations. BIS Services use GAS to monitor outcomes.
Practical Sessions
Practical, real-world activities aimed at restoring cognitive function. These may include memory exercises, attention-building tasks, problem-solving tasks, and structured emotional regulation strategies. Throughout, feedback and positive reinforcement serve to aid insight and awareness, whilst boosting meta cognitive skills.
Ongoing Monitoring
We monitor progress consistently, ensuring that rehabilitation plans evolve based on how the individual responds. This flexible approach ensures continued, sustained improvement. Scaffolds and strategies should be regularly reviewed for uptake and habitutation, and modified as skills improve.

Testimonials
The report and recommendations Natalie produced to share with my work at the end of our 12 sessions was incredibly valuable to help them better understand how my brain works and how to get the best out of me. HR and my Line Manager created a tailored development plan based on the recommendations which helped me settle into my role and improved my performance significantly. It also helped improve my working relationship with my Line Manager as before reading the report he had limited understanding of ADHD and how it affected me and we had struggled to see eye-to-eye on a number of occasions.
CLIENT
I fully understand now what is happening within my brain, as wasn’t given an insight from the hospital/OT. I am able to use the tools provided, in my daily life should I require them. I now don’t feel quite so broken/damaged, as understanding Neuro fatigue means I can manage it. I am improving all the time
